Brad Ausmus and Johnny Cueto

In what was a pretty oppressive show of baseball Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, the Detroit Tigers struggled to produce anything offensively against the now-clearly-much-better Kansas City Royals, who ultimately shut the Tigers out. A particular point of butthurtedness arose when Tigers manager Brad Ausmus complained to umpires that newly acquired KC pitcher, Johnny Cueto, was perpetrating an illegal delivery, which Ausmus felt should be considered a balk. Though few, if any, can argue that Cueto’s delivery is not altogether unconventional, the official MLB rules for pitchers are about as thorough and difficult to parse as real laws, so we’ll let you do that on your own time, if the fancy strikes. Otherwise, we’ll have to let it suffice to say that Ausmus and the Tigers have seen better seasons (and Ausmus may not be seeing any future seasons), but that Cueto’s delivery, bizarre as it might be, exists within a legal grey area that requires more than 200 words to fully explore.
